Vive el Evangelio de la Vida Hace veinticinco años san Juan Pablo II escribió que el Evangelio de la vida es el centro del mensaje salvífico de Jesús al mundo (Evangelium vitae 1). Al hacerse humano, viviendo entre nosotros y sacrificando su vida por nuestra redención, Cristo revela la profunda dignidad de cada persona humana. Esta dignidad dada por Dios no cambia durante las etapas de la vida, la capacidad, el grado de independencia o cualquiera otra circunstancia variable. ​ Más bien se fundamenta en el hecho permanente de que cada uno de nosotros está hecho a imagen y semejanza del Creador, para compartir la vida de Dios mismo. La persona humana es una “manifestación de Dios en el mundo, signo de su presencia, resplandor de su gloria” (EV 34). Y tenemos que reflejar esta verdad en cómo actuamos y cómo nos tratamos unos a otros. Siga hacia abajo para ver otros formatos de este artículo. La verdad del Evangelio de la vida es el fundamento de quiénes somos como seguidores de Cristo. En su vida terrenal, Jesús nos proporcionó el modelo perfecto de cómo debemos amar a nuestro prójimo y vivir la llamada del Evangelio: “En verdad les digo que, cuando lo hicieron con alguno de los más pequeños de estos mis hermanos, me lo hicieron a mí” (Mt 25,40). ​ Jesus nos llama cada uno de nosotros a “hacernos cargo del otro como persona confiada por Dios a nuestra responsabilidad” (EV 87). El Evangelio de la vida es intrínseco a toda la vida cristiana y fundamental a las decisiones que tomamos diariamente. “El Evangelio del amor de Dios al hombre, el Evangelio de la dignidad de la persona y el Evangelio de la vida son un único e indivisible Evangelio” (EV 2, énfasis agregado). ​ En su encíclica sobre el Evangelio de la vida, san Juan Pablo II reconoce la gama completa de amenazas contra la vida humana, tales como la pobreza y la desnutrición hasta el asesinato y la guerra. DÍA 6 21 de enero ENGLISH INTERCESIÓN Que todos los que apoyan o participan en un aborto tengan una conversión de corazón para buscar y recibir la infinita misericordia del Señor. ORACIONES Padre nuestro, 3 Ave Marías, Gloria REFLEXIÓN Cuando Dios formó a la persona humana a su imagen y semejanza, nos destinó para la vida eterna con Él. Sin embargo, debido al pecado de nuestros primeros padres, la muerte entró en el mundo. El libro del Génesis relata la primera ocasión en que una persona le quita la vida a otra, cuando Caín mata violentamente a su hermano Abel. Este caso de hermano alzándose contra hermano “al comienzo de la historia es el triste testimonio de cómo el mal avanza con rapidez impresionante” (Evangelium vitae 8). ​ Desde este momento, la indiferencia por la vida humana ha seguido extendiéndose. Cuando nosotros, como Caín, dejamos que el pecado encuentre un lugar en nuestro corazón, nos volvemos ciegos a la verdad. A veces esta ceguera puede ser tan profunda que no reconocemos la humanidad innegable de los niños en el vientre materno. Podemos incluso creer trágicamente la mentira de que el aborto es un acto de compasión. Pero sabemos que “la vida, especialmente la humana, pertenece sólo a Dios: por eso quien atenta contra la vida del hombre, de alguna manera atenta contra Dios mismo” (EV 9). Oremos para que todos los que apoyan el aborto se encuentren con el amor transformador del Padre y, con el corazón arrepentido, busquen su misericordia. ACTOS DE REPARACIÓN (elige uno) Sonríe. CONSIDERACIONES CATÓLICAS PARA NUESTRA PARTIDA A LA OTRA VIDA Sabemos que la muerte no es el fin, sino más bien la puerta para pasar a la vida eterna. La fe y esperanza en la Resurrección nos permiten enfrentar la muerte preparados y sin temor. Aunque ciertamente no son exhaustivas, presentamos las siguientes consideraciones como puntos de partida para entender y prepararnos para este paso, sea inminente o no. ​ Ahora y en la hora de nuestra muerte [1] Nos preparamos para la vida eterna amando y obedeciendo a Dios ahora y en las decisiones cotidianas: mediante la oración y la recepción regular de los sacramentos, especialmente la Confesión y la Eucaristía, obtenemos la gracia de vivir en una comunión cada vez más profunda con Dios y entre nosotros en vidas de fe, caridad y justicia.[2] Pedimos ahora la ayuda de Nuestra Santísima Madre, y nos encomendamos más a ella "para entregarle desde ahora, 'la hora de nuestra muerte'". Dios nos ha confiado el don de la vida, y como respuesta, cuidamos la vida y la salud en obediencia y gratitud a nuestro Creador. ​ Esto nos obliga a buscar atención médica adecuada y eficaz. Sin embargo, algunas veces tratamientos eficaces y hasta de soporte vital imponen una carga tan grande que, en conciencia, podemos renunciar a ellos o interrumpirlos. Y por supuesto, no se debe hacer ni omitir nada deliberadamente para acelerar la muerte.[8] La Iglesia afirma la dignidad inviolable de toda persona, independientemente de la duración o extensión de la incapacidad o dependencia de la persona. Nada disminuye la inmutable dignidad y santidad de la vida de una persona, ni la obligación de protegerla y cuidarla. En principio, se debe proporcionar alimentación e hidratación asistida salvo en casos en los que no pueda dar soporte vital o sea indebidamente gravosa para el paciente, o si la muerte es inminente. ​ Además nadie debe elegir el suicidio, ni aconsejar o ayudar a otro a quitarse la vida. ​ Opciones de tratamiento Evaluar el efecto y la carga de los tratamientos puede ser difícil, especialmente cuando la muerte se acerca. Para entender los efectos sobre la salud y las opciones de tratamiento, necesitamos asesoramiento médico profesional. Para entender la doctrina moral católica, necesitamos consultar la doctrina de la Iglesia y a aquellos que pueden explicarla fielmente. ​ Hablar con los seres queridos Después de informar la conciencia, debemos informar a la familia. Si no podemos tomar decisiones, generalmente ellas tienen la autoridad legal para tomarlas en nuestro nombre. O podemos designar ante notario a un apoderado duradero de atención médica. ​ Sin embargo, ningún testamento vital puede reemplazar lo que hayamos expresado libre y claramente sobre nuestros principios guiados por la fe. La mejor opción es elegir un apoderado que tome decisiones médicas en nuestro nombre que sean fieles a nuestra fe y la doctrina de la Iglesia, y sobre nuestras preferencias de atención pastoral; y que después de la muerte deseamos oraciones, exequias y entierro cristiano.[9] ​ Acompañar antes y después de la muerte [10] Los enfermos no deben estar solos, como nos han recordado varios papas en los mensajes para la Jornada Mundial del Enfermo. Los pacientes graves o desahuciados, así como sus familias, pueden recibir atención física, psicológica y espiritual a través del cuidado paliativo en equipo.[11] El cuidado terminal puede proporcionar similar atención integral a las personas que se acercan a la muerte y a sus familias. ​ Esto incluye la atención pastoral que pone a su disposición la Eucaristía, la Confesión, la Unción de los Enfermos y el Viático,[12] así como oraciones[13] y apoyo a los que toman decisiones. Es útil familiarizarnos con los servicios locales disponibles en preparación para nuestro paso terrenal o el de nuestros seres queridos. ​ Y después de la muerte, el acompañamiento continúa. Nuestras oraciones pueden ayudar a quienes están siendo purificados en el Purgatorio, por eso es una obra de misericordia espiritual rezar por los que han muerto.[14] Esperar la Resurrección ​ Los que mueren en la gracia y amistad de Dios viven para siempre con Cristo. El cielo no es una idea abstracta, sino una relación verdadera y duradera con Dios que está más allá de toda descripción y entendimiento terrenal. Esperamos la resurrección de los muertos y la vida eterna preparándonos ahora, en la esperanza, para nuestro paso de esta vida a la vida eterna. ​ No tenemos que temer. The provided resources, ideas, and activities are only suggestions. We encourage you to adapt them as necessary for your specific youth ministry. Feel free to get creative as you build "an authentic civilization of truth and love" (Evangelium vitae , 6) among the youth of your parish. Check out our Action Guides for additional ideas and step-by-step instructions for highlighting Respect Life themes year-round! VIEW POSTER & PRAYER CARD This Respect Life poster focuses on our call to radical solidarity with mothers in need and their children, reminding us of our responsibility to put our love for them into action. Consider hanging it in your regular meeting space and using it in conjunction with the Prayer for Radical Solidarity to introduce the Church's teaching on the dignity of the human person. POSTER PRAYER SAMPLE ACTIVITY Respect Life Bulletin Board ​ This activity* invites youth to help create an interactive Respect Life bulletin board. The idea is to hang the Respect Life poster in the center of a large bulletin board or other prominent area with space around it. Then, invite members of your youth group to add their own items to the board (or to the surrounding area) that illustrate and unpack Respect Life themes. ​ For a youth group setting, consider having a stack of old magazines on hand that can be used for clipping words and photos that can be posted to the Respect Life display. You can find this activity in our Respect Life Month Action Guide . *This activity can also be completed individually. Download the blank bulletin board template as a double-sided PDF with instructions to allow each youth to create their own display. VIEW & DOWNLOAD REFLECTION This short reflection unpacks the theme of radical solidarity, highlighting how Catholics are called to put their love for others into action. You can use the reflection to help inspire a youth ministry meeting highlighting Respect Life topics. ​ The reflection could also be read aloud together to open a larger discussion or lead into a time of prayer, possibly before the Blessed Sacrament. Or, it could also be used as a small group prompt, with a series of discussion questions. For example: Why do you think Jesus says love will be the identifying characteristic of His disciples? What are some of the challenges a woman may face in welcoming an unexpected baby? What do think are some of the new opportunities and responsibilities we have after the overturning of Roe v. Wade ? Why is this such an important moment? What are some examples of radical solidarity with moms in need? How can we put our love into action? Individually? As a youth group? What gifts do I have that I could use to support moms in need in my community? VIEW DOWNLOAD INTERCESSIONS Prayer is the basis of all our efforts to build a culture of life. The provided intercessions are appropriate for use during Mass in the Prayer of the Faithful. Consider using them in a Mass being celebrated during a youth event or at a parish Mass where you know many youth will be present. ​ If you open or close your gatherings in prayer, incorporate one or more of the intercessions, and invite students to add their own prayer intentions related to the sanctity of human life. Perhaps you could send each youth home with a specific intention to pray for throughout the week and encourage them to pray for the intention with their families. LEADER TOOLKIT Faith Formation This leader toolkit is provided to help catechists build a culture of life throughout the year, whenever Respect Life themes best fit into your faith formation curriculum. The provided resources, ideas, and activities are only suggestions. We encourage you to adapt them as necessary for your faith formation program. Feel free to get creative as you build "an authentic civilization of truth and love" ( Evangelium vitae , 6) among the children of your parish. ACTION GUIDES POSTER & PRAYER CARD Consider hanging the Respect Life poster in your classroom or meeting space and using it to introduce the Church's teaching on the dignity of the human person. T his Respect Life poster focuses on our call to radical solidarity with mothers in need and their children, reminding us of our responsibility to put our love for them into action. ​ Incorporate the Prayer for Radical Solidarity into your class prayers and send a copy home with students. POSTER PRAYER CARD REFLECTION The Respect Life reflection unpacks this year's theme, "Christ Our Hope: In Every Season of Life. " You can use the reflection to help inspire a lesson introducing Respect Life Month—when you hang the poster—or to highlight Respect Life topics throughout the year. ​ The reflection could also be read aloud as a class to open a larger discussion. For example, older students could be asked to reflect on what they read and share about God's presence during a challenging season of their own life. Younger students might be asked to think of a time they were nervous or afraid but felt God was protecting them, and share it with the class. ​ View and download the reflection as a PDF or Word document. VIEW DOWNLOAD INTERCESSIONS Prayer is the basis of all our efforts to build a culture of life. The provided intercessions are appropriate for use during Mass in the Prayer of the Faithful, but they can also be used in various other ways. ​ Consider incorporating one or more of the intercessions into your prayer time during class, and invite students to add their own prayer intentions related to the sanctity of human life. SAMPLE ACTIVITY This activity invites students to create their own poster to help them connect Respect Life themes with their own lives. Each student receives a poster template with an empty bulletin board. They are then instructed to fill the bulletin board with images and/or words that represent respect for life from the beginning of life to its end. For younger students, they can be asked to color, draw pictures, or write about what reminds them of God's presence in their lives. Older students can be asked to bring in items and photos that represent respect for life and attach them to their bulletin board. You could also bring in an old stack of magazines and have students cut out words and photos. They can also write their own prayer intentions on their bulletin board. *This activity can also be completed as a group.
